I performed some further tests. It seems that the booking plugin causes the crash when the free ‘child’-ticket doesn’t have it’s meta-data set; which makes sense because a booking needs a date. When I replace the free child ticket by a free simple product, the site keeps working…

Instead of adding the child-ticket would it be an option to offer a 100% discount on every 2nd ticket in the cart when the coupon is applied?
