I am not seeing a way to build a coupon code that will work with this:
Buy 1 item, get the second item for a $1 in multiple sets

Setting up a coupon for one pair is easy.
Cart discount of item price less $1.

But can’t find how to discount if someone orders say 3 total items but won’t discount the third until a 4th is added to the cart, ie, 3 items in cart will only discount two.

    Is this possible?

GENERAL: Discount type: Fixed product discount
    GENERAL: Coupon amount: 1
USAGE RESTRICTION: Minimum quantity of matching products: 2
USAGE LIMITS: Limit discount to: Every nth item

This will discount $ 1 from every 2nd item in cart.

Sorry, misread. You’re right, it’s not possible to set discount to “original price – $ 1”
